The Tidy Towns annual nature walk takes place on Bank Holiday Monday the 4th of May.
This is always a beautiful walk on the roads around Lough Slawn because of its high heritage value.
Lough Slawn and the surrounding meadows have now been given special protection in the Longford Co. Development Plan because of the rare plant life that has been allowed to develop over the last 50 years.
Dr Catherine Farrell, an Ecologist with Bord na Mona will give a talk on this unique area at the end of the walk.
Valuable prizes will be raffled for all who take part.
The walk starts from The Hill at 2:30 pm.

The Irish Hospice Foundation is now seeking to appoint experienced, energetic people to raise funds in the local area through a variety of fundraising activities canvassing for donors who are willing to support its work through regular monthly payments. These positions are self-employed long term. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role which will involve a variety of fundraising activities. Full training will be provided. The Irish Cancer Society’s Care to Drive service is currently seeking volunteer drivers to drive local patients to and from their chemotherapy treatments. We are looking for volunteers to pick patients up at their homes, drive them to the door of the hospital, pick them up when they are finished their treatment and bring them home again. The Harvest Festival will be held in Newtowncashel on Sunday the 23rd of August, commencing at 12.00 noon. This will be the festival's third consecutive visit to Newtowncashel, thanks to the availability and suitability of the site and the success of the event on the two previous occasions. On 9th May next at 4.15am our Darkness into Light walk in aid of Pieta house takes place. The official launch of Longford's walk will take place on Easter Saturday in Tesco shopping centre from 11am to 3pm. Anyone who wishes can register with us on the day and receive their t-shirt. If you have already registered online you can pick up your t-shirt on Easter Saturday also. We will have representatives from a wide section of the community attending the launch as well as some local celebrities. Why not come along and join us and register to take part in what will be an unforgettable experience.

Walking / jogging groups - Every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 9 pm from 'The Local'. Everybody welcome.

Calling all ladies that would like to take part in the VHI mini marathon on June 1st to consider joining a local group of ladies walking / jogging in memory of baby Keela Geraghty. The Annual Pioneer Outing takes place on Wednesday the 15th of July,destination Dublin.Details are as follows.Depart from The Hill.Further pickups en route. 9.30 a.m. Restroom break at the Applegreen M4 Service Station 10.30 a.m. Tea/Coffee and scones at Glasnevin Cemetery including the O'Connell crypt and tower,the graves of Michael Collins and Constance Markievicz.This is a particularly interesting visit as we approach the centenary of 1916. 12.00  noon.Guided tour of the National Botanical Gardens. 1.00 p.m. Oppurtunity for lunch at the gardens restaurant. 2.00 p.m. Board coach for the National Museum of Ireland,Kildare St. This is a self-guided visit with amazing exhibits on view. 4.30 p.m.Free time at the Liffey Valley shopping centre. Option of dinner in Dublin before departure,or on the homeward journey. The cost is €40.00,payable when booking.The charge includes,coach hire,driver/guide,morning coffee, and admission to to designated places of interest.It does not include lunch and dinner which are at the discretion of individuals. Congratulations to everyone that won yesterday at our field events. Training will commence on these events as soon as the track events are over. Track events this Friday evening on GAA pitch with first race off at 5:30pm. Registration at 5:00. €2 entry fee per child and anyone that hasn’t registered earlier in the year it’s another €2.

Fine Gael:
The Fine Gael National Collection will take place next weekend Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd May.

The death occured on Tuesday the 21st   of April last of Danny Farrell ,Elfeet and Inchcleraun.Danny was one of life's true gentleman,a hardworking family man who lived his life with honesty and integrity.All his life he had a tremendous affinity with the lake Lough Ree,from when he was born right through to his passing.His death will leave a huge void in the lives of all those who knew him.To his wife Monica,daughters Breda,Bernadette,Monica,sons Herbert and Donall, and all his many family and friends,we extend our deepest sympathy.May his Soul Rest in Peace.

Congratulations to the U13  pioneer quiz team from St Marys National School who, after a mammoth tie breaker round of 14 questions came 3rd in the All Ireland Pioneer Quiz final held in the Hotel Kilmore in Cavan on Saturday last 25/04/15. The team consisted of Cathy Kelly, Mark Brehon, Luke Mulvihill, David Sweeney and Harry Murray. The team would like to thank the Newtowncashel Branch of the Pioneer Association for sponsoring refreshments on the day and also the day out in Mountmellick at the regional final held 29/03/15.

ON BEHALF OF ARTHRITIS IRELAND LONGFORD BRANCH the Committee would like to express our very sincere thanks to the folks of NTC for their very generous donations to the Churchgate collections on 18th/19th April. The Student Scholarship,sponsored by Ballymahon and District Credit Union is operational again this year. It is open to all Leaving Cert students attending the Vocational and Mercy Secondary Schools. The student must be completing a FÁS Apprenticeship, full time Certificate, Diploma or Degree course at any University, IT or approved third level college. All students who wish to enter the draw, must be a member of the Credit Union before the 31st of May 2015.The recipient of the Scholarship will receive €1000.00 per annum for a maximum of three years.

Recitation of the Rosay has resumed and continues on Fridays at 7.30 p.m. All are welcome.
