The Tidy Towns annual nature walk takes place on Bank Holiday Monday the 4th of May.
This is always a beautiful walk on the roads around Lough Slawn because of its high heritage value.
Lough Slawn and the surrounding meadows have now been given special protection in the Longford Co. Development Plan because of the rare plant life that has been allowed to develop over the last 50 years.
Dr Catherine Farrell, an Ecologist with Bord na Mona will give a talk on this unique area at the end of the walk.
Valuable prizes will be raffled for all who take part.
The walk starts from The Hill at 2:30 pm.

The Irish Hospice Foundation is now seeking to appoint experienced, energetic people to raise funds in the local area through a variety of fundraising activities canvassing for donors who are willing to support its work through regular monthly payments. These positions are self-employed long term. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role which will involve a variety of fundraising activities. Full training will be provided. The Irish Cancer Society’s Care to Drive service is currently seeking volunteer drivers to drive local patients to and from their chemotherapy treatments. We are looking for volunteers to pick patients up at their homes, drive them to the door of the hospital, pick them up when they are finished their treatment and bring them home again. The Newtowncashel Tidy Towns Annual Sponsored Walk, takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, the 4th of May. Sponsorship cards are available from committee members and the local shop.

The Harvest Festival will be held in Newtowncashel on Sunday the 23rd of August, commencing at 12.00 noon. This will be the festival's third consecutive visit to Newtowncashel, thanks to the availability and suitability of the site and the success of the event on the two previous occasions. On 9th May next at 4.15am our Darkness into Light walk in aid of Pieta house takes place. The official launch of Longford's walk will take place on Easter Saturday in Tesco shopping centre from 11am to 3pm. Anyone who wishes can register with us on the day and receive their t-shirt. If you have already registered online you can pick up your t-shirt on Easter Saturday also. We will have representatives from a wide section of the community attending the launch as well as some local celebrities. Why not come along and join us and register to take part in what will be an unforgettable experience.

Walking / jogging groups - Every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 9 pm from 'The Local'. Everybody welcome.

Calling all ladies that would like to take part in the VHI mini marathon on June 1st to consider joining a local group of ladies walking / jogging in memory of baby Keela Geraghty. Newtowncashel Community games committee would like to thank everyone that contributed in any way possible to make their Recent Monster Auction a massive success.
Thanks to everyone that donated items for Auction and also to everyone that turned up and purchased.
There was a massive amount and variety of goods on offer.
Hopefully everyone got a bargain and that everyone was happy with their purchase.
Thanks also to everyone that baked Cakes, buns, jams and tarts for our cake sale and also those that purchased them. There was a fantastic display on offer.
A big thank you goes to all non-Committee members that helped out over the two days from sorting out all the goods in the hall, labelling the lots, selling items, keeping accounts and records up to date.
Thanks to the girls for running our tea shop on the day and for cleaning up the hall at the end and also hall committee for use of the hall.
Thanks to everyone that advertised our auction, church newsletter, local paper, Facebook, text messages, emails and Shannonside radio.
Thanks to our Auctioneer Denis O’Roarke who did a fantastic job on the day and also kept the crowd entertained.
Best of luck to our Table tennis U16 team who play Killashee this Friday in the county final.
Field events will be taking place this weekend, Shot putt, javelin, and discus for U12, U14 and U16 etc.
Our running events is provisionally booked for Friday the 1st of May weather permitting.
County Swimming finals will take place on Monday the 4th of May.
The first round of Leinster Competition will be held on one day Saturday 7th June in Edgeworthstown.
Leinster finals will be held on one day Saturday 4th July in Newbridge, Co. Kildare.

Longford MS
Longford MS  would like to say a big thank you to all who helped, organized and most importantly contributed to our recent church gate collection. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

Well done to the Cashel Senior Football team who had a well deserved draw against Clonguish in the Division 1 of the football league last Wednesday night,in Pairc Ciaran.

St.Mary's National School enrolment for September 2015,takes place from the 20th to the 24th of April.Enrolment packs can be collected from the school and relevant forms must be returned byFriday the 1st of May.

Good luck to the Under - 13 team,from St.Mary's National School,who contest the All-Ireland Quiz Final at the Hotel Kilmore,Cavan,on Saturday the 25th of April next.

Underage training will commence on Sunday the 26th of April,at 11.45 a.m. ,in Pairc Ciaran.
Children must be registered before taking part in any training,blitz or games.

The Annual Pioneer Outing takes place on Wednesday the 15th of July,destination Dublin.Details are as follows.Depart from The Hill.Further pickups en route. 9.30 a.m. Restroom break at the Applegreen M4 Service Station 10.30 a.m. Tea/Coffee and scones at Glasnevin Cemetery including the O'Connell crypt and tower,the graves of Michael Collins and Constance Markievicz.This is a particularly interesting visit as we approach the centenary of 1916. 12.00  noon.Guided tour of the National Botanical Gardens. 1.00 p.m. Oppurtunity for lunch at the gardens restaurant. 2.00 p.m. Board coach for the National Museum of Ireland,Kildare St. This is a self-guided visit with amazing exhibits on view. 4.30 p.m.Free time at the Liffey Valley shopping centre. Option of dinner in Dublin before departure,or on the homeward journey. The cost is €40.00,payable when booking.The charge includes,coach hire,driver/guide,morning coffee, and admission to to designated places of interest.It does not include lunch and dinner which are at the discretion of individuals. We extend best wishes to Fr.Michael Murtagh C.Ss. R who completed seven years as Superior at  Clonard Monastery,Belfast,last weekend.He is to take up duty in Cherry Orchard Parish,Dublin,in 2016. We wish him well in his new assignment when the time arrives.
